LGBT Health and Wellbeing

Since 2017, we’ve been working with LGBT Health and Wellbeing to explore the stigma faced by LGBT+ people in Scotland.

Homophobia, bi-phobia and transphobia mean that LGBT+ people can experience specific forms of stigma and discrimination when it comes to mental health.

To help to better understand the intersections of these experiences with other forms of discrimination and tackle the stigma that still exists, See Me have worked in partnership with LGBT Health and Wellbeing since 2017.

See Me Proud logoTogether we created See Me Proud, a group of community champions raising awareness of mental health stigma and discrimination within their communities and wider society.

In the seven years of the partnership, volunteers; created zines, attended pride events, produced graphic novels, led training sessions and workshops to raise awareness of stigma and discrimination, ran stalls at events, created resources, recorded podcasts, worked with strategic bodies, gained places on boards and made films.

Our partners at LGBT Health and Wellbeing enabled See Me Proud champions to create the conditions where people felt supported to share their experiences safely.  The project has successfully demonstrated how using a culturally appropriate, peer-led approach can result in a deeper understanding of the nature and impact of the intersectional stigmas impacting the group. This in turn has resulted in closer partnership working and greater accessibility and shared understanding.

Our partners at Mental Health Foundation are currently producing an evaluation of See Me Proud which will be shared here.
