Monuments for the Present

Monuments for the Present was a participatory art project with Maryhill Integration Network’s Museum of Things art group

Maryhill Integration Network

Maryhill Integration Network received funding from See Me which contributed to the Monuments for the Present project.

Monuments for the Present was the 2024 iteration of a project begun in 2022, Monuments for Equality. The project was led by artist Paria Goodarzi, heritage curator Mia Gubbay, and contemporary art curator Francesca Zappia and was delivered in collaboration with the Museum of Things art group from the Maryhill Integration Network [MIN]

Participants engaged with a series of guided conversations and workshops exploring their experience of navigating civic space as people with experience of the asylum system. This culminated in exhibitions at Byres Road Community Hub and the CCA. Monuments for the Present | Francesca Zappia

Project leads reflected:

The project provided participants with an opportunity to experience and learn different methods of observation, encouraging them to critically reflect on social and political conversations. Rather than simply accepting societal and political norms, they were empowered to question and challenge them.
